Frequently Asked ?’s ?’s ?’s and Answers Too!

What should I expect at my first therapy session?
We will welcome you and start the session inquiring about what has brought you to treatment, discuss some of your life history especially related with your current situation, discuss what you want to take away from therapy or your goals what you wish to accomplish. We will review some of our policies and practice information. And importantly answer any questions or concerns you might have!

Do I have to give an answer to every question I’m asked?
You are in the driver’s seat of the information you share how much or how little is up to you! Mostly we want you to feel comfortable and not pressured to disclose anything you do not want to. It’s ok to be open and honest when asked a question you do not want to discuss and let us know that! We will respect your choice.

How long will I be attending therapy?
Like many things in life it all depends…some people attend only a few sessions, some people attend therapy for a long time. It depends on your needs, your situation, your therapy goals. Ultimately you decide when it is time for your treatment to end…we will do that together with you.

How often do I have a therapy session?
Some people like to attend weekly sessions others space them out. As time goes on people who start attending weekly sessions will often space them out as they make progress on their goals. We will ask you what you think would be most helpful for you to do. And check in on that each session you attend.

What do I talk about in my therapy sessions?
After your initial session we will start with where you are at and with what you need to discuss. Your therapist will listen, ask questions, provide you with feedback and support, and offer you tools to consider adding to your life coping tool box.

What if I don’t click with my therapist?
Bottom line not everyone is going to click with everyone and that is ok. What we want for you is the best fit possible so you can continue your life journey being supported in the ways that work best for you. Just let us know if it isn’t working for you…no harm done, no hard feelings…we will wish you well and thank you for giving us a try!

What if I have an emergency before my next session?
If you have suicidal thoughts that are intense and you fear you may act upon them, or intense self-harm thoughts, or thoughts to hurt or kill someone else please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. If your emergency situation is more something that you need to talk through you can call 988. They will each evaluate the level of care you need right now and help you get to it! Don’t wait please!

What if I need to talk to my therapist before my next session?
If you have an urgent reason to talk to your therapist before your next session you can use your portal to see about appointment availability and make a request to schedule one of those times. You can call and leave a message that we will return when it is possible to do so. Please know our availability by phone is limited.

Jude Vereyken has a professional will in place. I have designated a colleague to be my professional executor in the event of my death or disability who will have access to client records to notify and make referrals to other qualified professionals if needed.

How do I cancel a therapy session?
We ask that you give us a 24-hour notice to avoid a $50 cancelation or missed appointment fee. To cancel you can log into your portal and cancel it via the appointment tab or you can give us a call and leave a message 616/217-9489.

What if I forget my portal password?
Just let us know and we will email you a link to reset it!

What happens if there are technology problems during my tele-therapy session?
With technology you never know when a glitch will occur. It’s not a perfect system. We will do our best to communicate with you and call you if we lose the connection. And help you resolve the problem as best as we can.

What can I do to keep my tele-therapy sessions private?
It is important to set yourself up in a private location with a door and walls between you and others in your location. You want a spot that will ensure privacy and where you will unlikely be interrupted. If your session is completed at home let your family know not to disturb you. This is your private time. Set that boundary from the beginning.
