Depression Therapy

Have You Fallen Into A Dark Hole And Can’t Get Out?

Everyone experiences sadness at times. But depression is something more and is different from the regular mood changes and feelings we experience about everyday life. When we are struggling with depression it can feel just like we are falling into a very deep never ending dark hole.

With depression we can experience extreme sadness or despair that lasts more than days and a loss of pleasure or interest in activities for long periods of time. We can have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes feel as if life isn’t worth living. Depression can affect all aspects of our life, including relationships with family, friends and community, and lead to problems at school and at work.

Depression can happen to anyone. People who have lived through abuse, severe losses or other stressful events are more likely to develop depression. Women are more likely to have depression than men.

How Do I Know If I Have Depression?

Do you feel sluggish and isolate?
Do you lack motivation, drive or goals?
Do you have trouble getting out of bed in the morning?
Is the thought of keeping up with your personal and professional obligations almost too much?
Do you feel unloved or misunderstood in your relationships?
Do you feel like you are letting your partner down?
Have you not felt like your old self in months and have no energy to make changes?
Are you scared to feel anything at all?
Do you fear being judged or abandoned if you open up about all the pain you’ve experienced?
Do you have a hard time concentrating?
Do you feel worthless or have excessive guilt?
Do you have recurrent thoughts of death or suicide?
Do you feel hopeless or helpless?
Are you irritable and intolerant of others?
Do you have a hard time making decisions?
Do you avoid spending time with friends and participating in social activities?
Do you neglect your hobbies and interests?
Are you often tearful?
Do you have a hard time falling or staying a sleep or the opposite sleep too much?
Has your appetite changed?

It you answered yes to several of these questions it may be time to reach out for treatment. Untreated depression can result in serious health complications, and it’s important to reach out sooner rather than later to stop falling further down that deep dark hole!

You Are Not Alone

Depression is quite common. Researchers estimate that nearly 7% of adults in the United States have depression every year. More than 16% of U.S. adults — around 1 in 6 people — will experience depression at some point in their lifetime. However, these estimates are likely lower than reality because many people don’t seek medical help and don’t receive a diagnosis.

With the state of our current world more of us are experiencing depression. According to a 2023 Gallop Poll the percentage of U.S. adults who reported having been diagnosed with depression at some point in their lifetime reached 29.0%, nearly 10 percentage points higher than in 2015!

The stress of the Covid pandemic and the polarization that exists in the US certainly has taken a toll. All that negativity ‘out there’ has left many of us feeling physically and emotionally numb!

Being Happy Isn’t Always A Choice

Many people are under the mistaken impression that you can just choose to be happy and get better on your own. Due to judgments and societal stigma surrounding mental health, it can be embarrassing for someone suffering from depression to reach out for help.

When we see “perfect” social media posts from our friends—or articles being shared that misrepresent depression—it can increase feelings of guilt or shame and make it harder to seek the outside help we need to get better.

It’s more than just a bout of the blues, depression isn’t a weakness and you can’t simply “snap out” of it.

You May Have Some Concerns About Depression Therapy

Do I have to be on depression medication in addition to therapy?
Sometimes medication can be helpful if depression is caused by a chemical imbalance. But medication isn’t right for everyone. You may want to try natural depression treatments before considering medication. We can discuss your options together so you can make the best decision for your needs.

I’m not sure I can really feel better, I’ve had depression for as long as I can remember.
Bottom line, you won’t ever know what therapy can do for you if you don’t try. There’s a reason you feel depressed, and professional support can help you find meaningful, lasting healing. If there’s something that’s holding you back, it’s likely a symptom of a deeper issue. No matter how long you have lived with depression, there is a path to healing. With the support of a therapist, you can start feeling better.
